The family life of Pek Ky…
Pek Ky has lived in Banteay Chhmar since he was born. Like the majority of Khmers in the region, Pek Ky's husband works in the fields growing mainly cassava and rice. She is now 40 years old and is the mother of two children: a 20-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter.
The development of a wide variety of accessories…
Pek Ky has several missions at Soieries du Mékong: she helps the scarf finishing team and is responsible for developing the accessories range.
The first accessories she designed were silk lotus flowers. She then worked on clips and then headbands. Today, the range of accessories is expanding: bracelets, necklaces, pouches, key rings, cushion covers and more recently our famous silk masks! But what Pek Ky loves most of all is bag design. She would dream of developing a range of handbags.
The production process of accessories…
Pek Ky explains to us that the production of accessories goes through several stages. First, the designer makes a sketch of the product. Next, the Banteay Chhmar design team executes a prototype which will be worked on and modified based on the guidance provided. Generally, three different prototypes are necessary before obtaining the final accessory.
The design of accessories is much faster than for scarves. In one day, Pek Ky can design ten bracelets! To do this, she cuts the silk from the skeins, braids the threads, then assembles everything.
A pronounced taste for China…
Apart from her interest in creation and fashion, Pek Ky is also passionate about China: the culture, particularly Chinese cinema, the landscapes... She would dream of being able to visit this country, but suffering from travel sickness, she experiences difficulty traveling.
